Practically Idealistic blog

The title for this blog originated with use of the term “practical idealist” in this 1996 opinion piece, which asked: “To what kind of work should a practical idealist aspire?” A century and a half earlier, Emerson, in his 1841 essay Circles, wrote: “There are degrees in idealism.  We learn first to play with it academically. . . .  Then we see in the heyday of youth and poetry that it may be true, that it is true in gleams and fragments.  Then, its countenance waxes stern and grand, and we see that it must be true.  It now shows itself ethical and practical.”  John Dewey and Mahatma Gandhi embraced practical idealism in the 20th century, as did UN Secretary General U Thant.  Al Gore invoked it in a 1998 speech. In the context of this blog, the term is meant to convey idealism tempered but not overwhelmed by realism: a search for the ideal on a path guided by common sense.

Wilbur Cross HS Basketball Team (including My Son)

A January 2026 post mentioned community service activities of New Haven's Wilbur Cross HS boys basketball team.

With the season now over, my son--a senior--has concluded his competitive career, which started in kindergarten in New Haven's Parks and Recreation League.

For the Cross HS team, this season was mixed, but there was significant resilience and some key victories as a young team grew toward the post-season this year and the promise of a more successful season in 2026-27.  Cross played a demanding schedule; opponents included both West Haven and Staples HS, which were the finalists in last night's Division I state championship game (West Haven won in triple OT).

Until the Division 1 state semi-finals, Connecticut's best team was Notre Dame of West Haven, like West Haven HS a Southern CT Conference rival of teams like Hillhouse HS and Cross HS. Led by (New Haven resident) Abdou Toure, who was named CT's Player of the Year for the second straight season, Notre Dame narrowly missed winning its third consecutive state title.

Cross played Notre Dame and Hillhouse twice each, among other challenging opponents.

My wife and I compiled a homemade video of our son's highlights, including footage against Notre Dame and Hillhouse, for example.
